Anger is inevitable. Sin is optional.

Anger is inevitable. Sin is optional.

Today’s Text: “Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.” (Ephesians 4:26–28, ESV)

“Be angry….”

It is inevitable that you’ll get angry. If you’re never angry, you’re probably just not in touch with what makes you mad.

“Do not sin….” Not sinning is the exhortation that matters most. Remember, inside every command of God is the promise of God. So it must be possible to be angry without falling into sin. But how?

One of the keys to conquering sin is found in the epistle to the Hebrews: “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need (rather than afterward).” (Hebrews 4:16, ESV)

We have gained access to the throne room of God solely by the blood of Jesus and none of our own righteousness. The gospel of grace means that whether we are just slightly irritable, or in full outrage, the blood of Jesus gives us access to the throne room of God. The Holy of Holies could be visited only once a year by the high priest on the Day of Atonement after the sprinkling of the blood. It was there, in that inmost sanctum, where the Ark of the Covenant abided. It was the symbolic seat of God’s mercy.

Now, in Christ, you’ve been made a priest, and you’ve been given free access to the throne of grace. You don’t need to wash yourself, to purify yourself, and to clean yourself up before you come to the throne of grace. Come to the throne of grace and be purified.

What this means is staggering. When you are MAD, you can go to God and acknowledge, I am MAD. You don’t have to wait until your anger subsides before going to the throne of grace. Go when you’re mad and say:  God, I am ANGRY. I don’t know what to do about it. I feel so frustrated, God, I’m coming to you with my anger. Come into His presence in the middle of your anger and allow His grace to fill you. Allow Him to help you understand your anger. God’s grace can set you free even when you’re mad. And that’s the Gospel!
